Sioux City Downtown Rotary Student of the Month Program

In 1980, Morrie Lefkow and Bob Knowler started the Student of the Month program to recognize outstanding high school students from Sioux City’s four high schools--East, Heelan, North and West.

The administrative staff from each of the Sioux City high schools selects two students to represent their building as Student of the Month.  Student selections are based upon:

·        Academic standing

·        Extra curricular activities

·        Community involvement

·        Leadership and service to others

Each student of the month is invited to a Rotary meeting, one per month from September through April, to meet club members and be recognized with a certificate and $100 cash award from the Youth Work Fund.  Students of the month are eligible for a $1,000 scholarship from Briar Cliff University, Morningside College or Western Iowa Tech Community College.

At the end of each school year, the entire club membership selects the Sioux City Downtown Rotary Club Student of the Year from the eight students of the month.  The Student of the Year receives an additional $400 cash award from the Rotary Work Fund and he or she becomes eligible for a $2,000 scholarship from the one of the three Sioux City colleges.
